VL - 60 U2 - w35 U3 - Abstract available N2 - This article explores the influence of nationalism and modernity in contemporary Zimbabwe and on the musical lives of Zimbabweans through an examination of 'muchongoyo', the signature dance-drumming tradition of Zimbabwe's Ndau communities. Invoking the concept of "Mugabeism", it illustrates how Shona nationalism and expectations of modernity have partially reshaped 'muchongoyo' in the turmoil of contemporary Zimbabwe. As indigenous practices serve political ends, their values shift. Consequently, there are now two 'muchongoyos': one rooted in the unique history and values of Zimbabwe's Ndau community, the other emerging from decades of political employment of indigenous music for the sake of nationalist discourse. VL - 60 IS - 1 U2 - w35 U3 - Abstract available N2 - This article provides a ground-level view of market taxation in two local government areas in Ghana's relatively disadvantaged northern region. It describes a system shaped by informal practices that are grounded in social relationships and collective norms, which sometimes foster greater equity and in other cases serve to reinforce existing inequalities. The evidence suggests the need for a more nuanced understanding of the highly informal and socially embedded realities of local tax collection, and the possibility that improved outcomes could be achieved by "working with the grain" of these inescapable local realities, while seeking to minimize potential costs of informality. VL - 60 IS - 1 U2 - w35 U3 - Abstract available N2 - Claims of sexual violence against female conscripts by military commanders abound in the Eritrean National Service (ENS), but hitherto there has been no attempt to subject these claims to rigorous empirical scrutiny. This article is a partial attempt to fill the gap. Based on data collected through snowball sampling from 190 former conscripts in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, South Africa, Kenya, and Sweden who fled from the ENS, supplemented by data from systematically selected key informants who were interviewed in depth, it examines the extent to which female conscripts serving in the ENS were subjected to sexual violence and harassment by their commanders, including at the Sawa military training camp. The extensive data, based on the perceptions and experiences of respondents who served on average about six years, suggest that sexual abuse is rampant throughout the ENS, particularly among female conscripts who are assigned to work at the camp subsequent to the six months of military training. The book offers fresh insight into the recent political development and contrasting experiences of four Maghreb countries: Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania. The Arab Spring affected them in different ways. Tunisia underwent profound change as Ben Ali was overthrown in a fortnight. Yet in Algeria, President Bouteflika won an unprecedented fourth term in office despite being too ill to campaign. What explains these variations? Why did Ben Ali's regime fall and Bouteflika's survive? Why has Morocco not gone the same way as Tunisia? And what of Mauritania, the often forgotten other Maghreb country? This book addresses these and other questions by using Steven Levitsky and Lucan Way's celebrated model for examining political transitions to analyse and compare the political development of Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania over the last ten years SN - 1-474-40897-4 AV - AFRIKA 52215 Y2 - 2017/08/31/ M3 - 410782025 ER - TY - BOOK ID - 3282 T1 - Eglises de r‚veil et salut chr‚tien au Congo-Kinshasa : quels d‚fis pour l'Eglise catholique? "The killing of thirty-four miners by police at Marikana in August 2012 was the largest massacre of civilians in South Africa since Sharpeville. The events have been covered in newspaper articles, on TV news and in a commission of inquiry, but there is still confusion about what happened on that fateful day. In Murder at Small Koppie, renowned photojournalist Greg Marinovich explores the truth behind the Marikana massacre. He investigates the shootings near Wonderkop hill, which happened in view of the media, as well as the killing that happened beyond the view of cameras at a nondescript collection of boulders knows as Small Koppie, some 300 metres away. Many of the men killed here were shot in cold blood at close range. Drawing on his own meticulous research, eyewitness accounts and the findings of the Marikana Commission of Inquiry, Marinovich accurately reconstructs that fateful day as well as the events leading up to the strike, and looks at the subsequent denials, obfuscation and buck-passing by Lonmin, the SAPS and the government. This is the definitive account of the Marikana massacre from the journalist whose award-winning investigation into the tragedy has been called the most important piece of South African journalism since apartheid."--Back cover SN - 1-7702-2609-5 AV - AFRIKA 52260 Y2 - 2017/01/09/ M3 - 408193778 ER - TY - BOOK ID - 3271 T1 - Nigerian political modernity and postcolonial predicament A1 - F ll ,T¢yn Y1 - 2016/// N1 - Bibliogr.: p. 449-470. - Met index, noten KW - democratization KW - modernization KW - Nigeria KW - political change RP - NOT IN FILE EP - XIII, 480 CY - Austin, TX [etc.] PB - Pan-African University Press [etc.] U2 - w35 SN - 978-1-943533-07-7 AV - AFRIKA 52349 Y2 - 2017/01/09/ M3 - 410578835 ER - TY - ADVS ID - 3264 T1 - Promises & lies : Fault lines in the ANC A1 - O'Connell,Siona Y1 - 2016/// N1 - Engels gesproken KW - African National Congress (South Africa) KW - documentary films (form) KW - exile KW - political conditions KW - political history KW - social problems KW - South Africa KW - videos (form) RP - NOT IN FILE CY - [Cape Town PB - Centre for Curating the Archive, University of Cape Town] U2 - w35 U3 - Abstract available N2 - This documentary film is part of a multimedia exhibition programme realised by Siona O'Connell in South Africa, that combines rare historical photographs of political exile and a documentary film. The programme, which is entitled 'Promises and Lies: The ANC, Exile and the Project of Freedom' aims to show the sacrifices of political exile and the promise of freedom that was its aspiration, in relation to a current feeling in South Africa of crisis and failure. The thirty photographs in this exhibition, taken in 1989 and1991 by British photographer Laurie Sparham, chronicle the experience of ANC exiles living in Tanzania and Zambia. They show behind-the-scenes moments as well as diplomatic encounters of former exiles such as Thabo Mbeki, Chris Hani, Joe Slovo and Jacob Zuma. The film, which includes interviews with Laurie Sparham, Trevor Manuel (former Finance Minister) and Robert McBride (Independent Police Investigative Directorate), considers the trajectory of the ANC through the lens of this historic photographic archive. It asks difficult questions of the ANC in an attempt to think about the shift from a party of liberation to a governing party. The film compels us to think about links and traces, aspirations and accountability, and, in the interests of an as-of-yet unrealised freedom, poses questions we must ask of history and its resonances in the present. Former inhabitants of District 6, Simonstown, Claremont, recall the receipt of the eviction notice, and the eviction itself. This visual and oral archive allows for new understandings of justice and freedom after oppression. Taking a series of photographs by artist David Brown as a starting point, the film opens a set of questions around trauma, memory and freedom in the aftermath of oppression. Intimate documents of family life, the photographs speak of the destruction of community and of the multiple valencies of place and home. This project speaks of catastrophe and of the unfinished business of apartheid. Approaching the notion of archive as being open-ended and not bound in time and space, the project suggests a set of debates that lie at the centre of post-apartheid society. In particular in anthropology, dead reckoning, as a third principle of orientation, is often neglected by scholars, whereas it seems to be the most important one in scarcely-or not-inhabited large-scale environments, as for example deserts. Based on observations, and also on oral and drawn evidence gathered during fieldwork in Niger, the present paper studies orientation among Tubu Teda. The evidence indicates that dead reckoning is their basic principle of orientation when navigating in the desert. During navigation, landscape patterns acquire a polyvalent function, as they not only allow verification but also serve as temporal and directional indices and thus support a line and a circle of position. U2 - w35 U3 - Abstract available N2 - This thesis finds its epistemological basis in two related motives: the re-conceptualisation of white writing in Zimbabwe as a sub-category of Zimbabwean literature, and the recognition of white narratives as necessarily dialogic. The first motive follows the realization that writing by Zimbabwean whites is systematically marginalized from "mainstream" Zimbabwean literature owing to its perceived irrelevance to the postcolonial Zimbabwean nation. Through an application of Even-Zohar's polysystem theory, this thesis argues for a recognition of white writing as a literary sub-system existing in relation to other literary and non-literary systems in Zimbabwe's polysystem of culture. As its second motive, the thesis also calls for a critical approach to white Zimbabwean narratives built on the understanding that the study of literature can no longer be left to monologic approaches alone. Rather, white narratives should be considered as multiple and hence amenable to a multiplicity of approaches that recognize dialogue as an essential aspect of all narratives. The thesis attempts, by closely reading nine white-authored narratives in Zimbabwe, to demonstrate that white Zimbabwean literature is characterized by multiplicity, simultaneity and instability; these are tropes developed from Bakhtin's understanding of utterances as characterized by a minimum of two voices. To consider white writing in Zimbabwe as a multiplicity is to call forth its numerous dimensions and breadth of perceptions. Simultaneity posits the need to understand opposites/conflicts as capable of existing side by side without necessarily dissolving into unity. Instability captures the several movements and destabilizations that affect writers, characters and the literary system. These three tropes enable a re-reading of white Zimbabwean narratives as complex and multi-nuanced. Such characteristics of the literary system are seen to reflect on the experiences of "whiteness" in postcolonial Zimbabwe. The white narratives selected for examination in this thesis therefore exhibit crises of belonging that reflect the dialogic nature of existence. In sum, this thesis is meant as a dialogue, culminating in the proposition that calls for a decentred and redemptive literary experience. Financial deepening accelerates economic growth through expansion of access to finance for those who do not have adequate finance themselves. Having access to finance is a key factor in poverty reduction. This study analyzes the interrelationship between financial deepening, domestic mobilization of savings, and poverty reduction in Kenya. The study finds that there is a unidirectional causality flowing from financial deepening to both savings and poverty reduction. The effect of financial deepening on poverty reduction in Kenya is positive, though not significant. Finally, the study finds the existence of a long run equilibrium relationship between financial deepening, savings mobilization, and poverty reduction. The government should take policy measures aimed at enhancing financial deepening because it is beneficial to both savings mobilization and poverty reduction. In particular, the interest rate margin should be reduced. It can be traced among those who are excluded from center to the periphery in domination and control, irrespective of race or location. Though the white race has considered whiteness as a stable identity, or signifier of rationality, sanity, power, it can be noted it is an unstable identity that is always under construction. White people also find themselves occupying the bottom space in the hierarchy of power and domination. U2 - w35 N2 - This study examines selected works by four white female Zimbabwean writers: Alexandra Fuller, Lauren Liebenberg, Bryony Rheam and Lauren St John, in light of the controversy over the spate of white memoirs which followed the violent confiscation of white farms in Zimbabwe from 2000 onwards. The controversy hinges on the notion that white memoir writers exploit the perceived victimhood of white Zimbabweans in the international sphere, and nostalgically recall a time of belonging as children in Rhodesia which fails to address the fraught colonial history which is directly related to the current political climate of the country. I argue that such critiques are too generalised, and I regard the selected texts as primarily critical of the values and lifestyles of white Rhodesians/Zimbabweans. The texts I have selected include a range of autobiographical and fictional writing, or memoirs and pseudo-memoirs, and I focus on form as a medium enabling an exploration of identity. The ways in which these authors conform to and adapt particular narratives of becoming is examined in each chapter, with a particular focus on the transition from innocence to experience, the autobiography, and the Bildungsroman. Gender is a recurring point of interest: in each case the female selves/protagonists are situated in terms of the family, which, in reflecting social values, is a key site of conflict. In regard to trends in white African writing, I explore the white African (farm) childhood memoir and the confessional mode. Ultimately I maintain that while the texts may be classified as white writing, as they are fundamentally concerned with white identity, and therefore evince certain limitations of perspective and form, including clich‚d tendencies, all the writers interrogate white identity and the fictional texts more self-reflexively deconstruct tropes of white writing AV - Elektronisch document Y2 - 2017/08/30/ M3 - 412514850 L3 - http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1001985 ER - TY - BOOK ID - 3316 T1 - Zimbabwe general certificate of education (ZGCE) for examinations in June/November 2013 2017 : O-level syllabus : geography (2248) Y1 - 2013/// KW - curriculum KW - geography education KW - secondary education KW - Zimbabwe RP - NOT IN FILE CY - Harare PB - ZIMSEC U1 - Free access. U2 - w35 N2 - The research for this thesis started off as a long academic essay that sought to review a 1970s biography of Kenneth Kaunda. In its original focus, the study aimed at evaluating the work on the narrations of Kenneth Kaundas life from a theoretical and critical perspective. Specifically it sought to evaluate the biography for its theoretical and methodological approaches, its attention to issues of sources, archives, narrative and history. In addition, it aimed at locating the biography in relation to debates over biography and history in South Africa. As I began my research for the long essay, it soon became apparent that the biography of Kenneth Kaunda ended its narration in 1964 and yet it was published ten years later in 1974. By ending its 'coverage' of the narrations of Kenneth Kaunda's life in 1964, it seemed obvious that its coverage was in many ways similar to his autobiography that was published in 1962. The ending of the biography's coverage in 1964 thus seemed rather abrupt as it precluded any representations of the subject in the post 1964 period in which he had become President of Zambia. Kenneth Kaunda was resident of Zambia for nearly three decades (1964-1991) having led the 'final' phase of the nationalist struggle for Independence through the United National Independence Party (UNIP). Surely, I surmised, the meanings of Kenneth Kaunda's life as nationalist leader, as presented in most of his biography, would differ from those of him as President? Upon evaluating the biography, it seemed to be a largely chronological and descriptive rather analytical account of the subjects life. However, what made it profound to me was the ways in which it entwined the narratives of Kenneth Kaundas life with the events, dates 1 The biography of Kenneth Kaunda by Fergus Macpherson was the subject of the long essay. Religion is a central part of African life. It is thus important that European NGOs, religious or secular, take into account the fabric of religious life and its societal impact when conducting development work. Western religion has helped shape the Europe of today: the drive to create an "ideal" society is strengthened and shaped around religious ideals. European faith-inspired organizations (FIOs) are therefore charged with an important task: to help Europeans understand the importance of religion in development work and to help develop secular cohesion within immigrant states. With the conflicts that arise between religious populations, European FIOs can help bridge these gaps and move European society forward into a more pluralistic age. This report was prepared as background for a consultation focused on faith and development on June 24 and 25, 2008 at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague; a report on that event was published separately [abstract publisher] AV - Elektronisch document Y2 - 2017/08/30/ M3 - 412468549 L3 - https://s3.amazonaws.com/berkley-center/ 090101FaithInspiredOrganizationsGlobalDevelopmentPolicyBackgroundReviewMappin gSocialEconomicDevelopmentWorkEuropeAfrica.pdf ER - TY - BOOK ID - 3328 T1 - Mechanisms of national integration in a multi-ethnic federal state : the Nigerian experiment A1 - Ojo,Emmanuel O.
