Jennifer Ugwu

Her Honour Jennifer Ifunanya Ugwu is a Nigerian lawyer and judge. She became the youngest person to assume the position of Customary Court Judge in 2019, after several years of active legal practice. As a Customary Court Judge, she led the court's panel of 3 judges, where she successfully presided over and timeously delivered judgments and rulings. She held this position for some years before taking a leave to further her studies in Europe. As a researcher, Ugwu's  interdisciplinary background and experience are reflected in her works. Some of her research includes the legal framework against forced marriage, gender stereotypes as a human rights violation, marginalisation and sexual exploitation of women, and challenges of female lawyers. Jennifer spends a great part of her life and career volunteering for organisations, advocating and defending human rights, gender-specific rights, child rights, peace and justice.

She is enthusiastic about sustainable development and continuous learning. She believes in the great potential of Africa and women in general and is driven towards continuously bridging any gap therein.
