Arlindo Barbeitos

book cover Nzoji bu A. BarbeitosOn 31 March 2021, Angolan poet and scholar Arlindo Barbeitos, in full Arlindo do Carmo Pires Barbeitos, died in Luanda at the age of 80. 

Arlindo Barbeitos was born in Icolo province of Bengo, Angola, on December 24, 1940. In 1961, he was forced to flee his country for political reasons. He went to Germany, where he studied anthropology and sociology at the University of Frankfurt. In 1971, he returned home to teach at several bases of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola during Angola’s struggle for independence. Due to health problems, he moved back to Germany where, from 1973 onwards, he devoted himself to a doctorate in Ethnology, while working as an assistant at the Institute of Ethnology at the Free University of West Berlin. In 1975, he returned to his homeland, where he became a university professor at the University of Angola.

Barbeitos was a founding member of the Union of Angolan Writers.
