East African Literatures
Inspired by the African Literary Metadata Project (ALMEDA), the ASCL Library compiled a web dossier on East African literatures. It showcases literary works in English and Swahili that have been published in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in the last ten years. All titles are available at the ASCL library. The dossier is introduced by ALMEDA's PI Ashleigh Harris and concludes with a number of relevant web resources including a selection of online literary works.
NB: Individual literary works published in a printed literary journal or an anthology are not included in the web dossier as the ASCL library does not catalogue creative works that are part of a book or a journal. The metadata of these works will be made accessible via the ALMEDA linked open data repository. The same applies to all forms of online fiction.

Introduction
In Decolonising the Mind: The Politics of Language in African Literature (1986), Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o notes that the “African novel and its development […] have been adversely affected by two factors”: first, “the printing press, the publishing houses and the educational context of the novel’s birth were controlled by the missionaries and the colonial administration” in Africa (wa Thiong’o 1986, 69), and secondly, “the rise of universities and colleges on the African soil at the beginning of the [nineteen] fifties” (70) were based on a colonial model that privileged the subject of ‘English Literature’ over other kinds of literary cultures. The consequence has been a central and persistent problem in which African literatures in European languages have been “given the identity of African literature as if there had never been a literature in African languages.” (wa Thiong’o 1986, 22)
Ngũgĩ’s point is a founding principle of the African Literary Metadata (ALMEDA) research project, which seeks to correct the systems of knowledge organization that have enabled the erasure of African literary traditions from the colonial era onwards. One of the most significant ways in which African literary traditions were ignored, was through the splitting of oral and written literatures into two different traditions (and archives), the one ethnographic and the other literary when the two were always deeply entangled in one another. While some African languages enjoyed substantial print infrastructure in the mid to late 19th century, many of these earlier initiatives were short lived and as the proselytizing missions gave way to formal colonial rule, African language presses dissipated. The decolonizing moment renewed national energies in African language publishing, but as Sarah Brouillette has argued, the African publishing industry and book trade was almost brought to a standstill by IMF and World Bank structural adjustment programs in the 1980s and 1990s. (Brouilette 2017)
The lack of available publishing resources in Africa, for African literary forms and languages, has meant that writers and poets have explored alternatives to the published book – and these alternatives both build on existing pre-colonial literary and oral traditions as well as develop new print and online forms. This body of literature includes oral forms like spoken word poetry, storytelling, and performed dramatic arts; print forms, like zines, literary magazines, and pamphlets; and online forms, such as twitterature, flash fiction, FaceBook-fiction and online comics. Indeed, the emergence of Web 2.0 in the early 2000s has been a game-changer in enabling ephemeral literary production and dissemination in Africa. But despite the fact that these ephemeral, and often informally published and distributed, forms can be seen to dominate African literature consumption across the continent today, only a small number of such materials find their ways into formal catalogues and archives.
The ALMEDA project catalogues and creates Linked Open Data on such ephemeral African literatures in multiple African languages. Some East African materials that pertain to this wonderful collection of materials at the ASCL Library include: serialized novels in Tanzanian and Kenyan newspapers from the mid-20th century; poetry and short stories from literary magazines such as Transition and Busara, where major East African writers, like Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o himself, published some of their first literary works; and the literary output of small non-profit publishers, like Femrite in Uganda, who publish a range of literary products, from books to magazines, and host numerous other literary activities.
What is most exciting about the dossier compiled by the ASCL library here is the fact that it weaves together the ephemeral materials that ALMEDA is concerned to catalogue alongside more formally published materials, which ultimately provides wide view of the contemporary Eastern African Literary field in ways that will be sustained for researchers in the future.

Writing Africa
WritingAfrica.com started on April 24, 2013, when its founder James Murua registered a blog to give visibility to African writers rarely covered by mainstream African media. Since its founding, he covered literary news from a distinctly Africa-centric lens. Its YouTube channel set up in 2020 contains more than 600 videos featuring African writers in their element at virtual and physical events.
