Introduction: Equatorial Guinea: its literature and visual arts
General Background
Equatorial Guinea is a former Spanish colony which gained its independence in 1968, with as its first president Francisco Macías Nguema, who turned the country into a dictatorship. Macías sought support from the Soviet Union, China, Cuba and North Korea among other countries. More than a third of the population and a large part of the intellectual elite fled the country under his regime. It seemed that the regime had come to its end in 1979 with “el Golpe de Libertad” (Coup of Freedom) led by Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who had his uncle Macías executed, but he set up a new dictatorship and enriched himself with the yields from oil. Although Obiang looked for connections with French and Portuguese-speaking countries linguistically, and while the various ethnic groups spoke their own languages, Spanish remained the main language of communication. Just as in many other African countries, Equatorial Guinea is characterized linguistically by a form of diglossia: in addition to the ethnic spoken languages (Bubi, Fang, Ndowe, Bisio, Annobones, Balengue, and Baseke), a second language is used; here, Spanish is the official language and lingua franca. Equatorial Guinean literature is written in Spanish and is published in Spain. Many writers and artists are connected with Spanish cultural centres in the country, but it also has had a university since 1995 (la Universidad Nacional de Guinea Equatorial; UNGE) which has an arts department in addition to the more pragmatic and technical departments. However, there are no cultural (art or literature) organizations set up by the government. Art and literary concerns are left to foreign (Spanish and French) cultural authorities who follow their own political agenda. Thus, many writers and artists now reside in the USA or Spain due to the political situation in their own country.
Literature
Among the writers who reside in Spain are Donato Ndongo-Bidyogo (b. 1950, Niefang) and Juan Tomás Ávila Laurel (b. 1966, Malabo), who each represent a different generation of writers. Ndongo has lived in Spain since the Macías regime. In 1977 his journalistic work and essays resulted in the book Historia y tragedia de Guinea Ecuatorial, a historical treatise regarding the Spanish colonization and the period of Macías’ dictatorship. Later, he wrote poetry, short stories, and novels, including Las tinieblas de mi memoria negra (1987), Los poderos de la tempestad (1997), and El metro (2007), and he played an important role in putting Equatorial Guinean literature on the map. In 1984, Antología de la literatura guineana was published, the first comprehensive literary review in which literary works of writers and poets from the colonial period as well as the following period are brought together. This literary review was extended twice, as Literatura de Guinea Ecuatorial (Antología), published in 2000 and compiled by Donato Ndongo and M’baré Ngom, and in 2012 as Nueva Antología de la literatura de Guinea Ecuatorial, again compiled by M’baré Ngom and Gloria Nistal.
Juan Tomás Ávila Laurel represents a younger generation of writers. He was born in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, but spent part of his youth in Annobón, an island far to the west in the Atlantic Ocean. Until 2011 he was the only writer in Equatorial Guinea who was still critical about his homeland when he undertook a hunger strike that year against Obiang’s dictatorship. He wrote essays, novels, plays, was chief editor of the literary magazine El patio and the magazine Atanga which is published by the CCEM, the Spanish cultural centre in Malabo. Since his hunger strike, he has resided in a village near Barcelona. His best known work, Arde el monte de noche (2009), was translated into English in 2014.
Los poderos de la tempestad by Donato Ndongo-Bidyogo gives a penetrating view of Macías’ reign of terror. Together with Las tinieblas de mi memoria negra and El metro the novel is a trilogy which illuminates different periods of African and Equatorial Guinean history. In his novels Ndongo-Bidyogo writes of his own youth as well, as the fate of the African refugee nowadays in El metro. In his novel Arde el monte de noche, Ávila Laurel writes of his youth in Annobón in the seventies. Macías has transported a part of the male population to Bioko, while the remaining residents are left to their own fate, even when there is an outbreak of cholera and the island is barely serviced by ships.
In Literatura de Guinea Ecuatorial (Antología), Donato Ndongo-Bidyogo and M’baré Ngom distinguish the following periods of Equatorial Guinean literary history containing the following novels:
I The colonial period
- Leoncio Evita, Cuando los combes luchaban (1953)
- Daniel Joes Mathama, Una lanza por el Boabi (1962)
II The years of nationalism and dictatorship; the years of ‘silence’ (1969-1979)

- Francisco Abeso Nguema (pseudonym Donato Ndongo-Bidyogo), La Travesía
- Donato Ndongo-Bidyogo, El sueño
- Maplal Loboch, La última carta del padre Fulgencio Abad, CMF
III The literature of Equatorial Guinea after the first dictatorship (1980-1999)

In Nueva Antología de la Literatura de Guinea Ecuatorial the first narrative part of the review has been extended to include 21st century literature:

La carga [not included in the review] - José Eneme Oyono, Más allá del deber
El hospital de la muerte - Donato Ndongo, El Metro
- Inocencio Engon, Nostalgia de un emigrante

Short stories by various other writers are also mentioned, such as by Juan Tomás Ávila Laurel; Awala cu Sangui, Nadie tiene Buena fama en este país, Rusia se va a Asamse; Cuentos crudos.
Visual arts
Important artists are Mene Manresa Bodipo (painting), Arturo Bibang (photography), Plácido ‘Pocho’ Guimaraes (textiles), and Ramón Esono Ebalé (drawings and cartoons). Mene Manresa Bodipo and Ramón Esono Ebalé were educated at the Spanish cultural centres in Malabo and Bata. Arturo Bibang and Plácido ‘Pocho’ Guimaraes went to Spain and the former Soviet Union (Pocho Guimares) for their education. The person who was the most politically active was Ramón Esono Ebalé (alias Jamón y Queso), who was born in 1977 in Nkoa-Nen Yebekuan. He shows a great variety in styles and techniques in his drawings, comics, and cartoons, in which the stereotypical, metaphorical, and the caricature play an important role. He was connected to the Spanish cultural centre in Malabo as an illustrator, graphic designer and cartoonist, but also exhibited outside Equatorial Guinea at art fairs and festivals in other African countries, Europe, and the United States. He stayed in Paraguay from 2011 to return to his own country in 2017, where he was imprisoned for half a year due to his earlier caricatures of President Teodoro Nguema Obiang and his comic La pesadilla de Obi. In this comic, Obi (Obiang) wakes up to the nightmare which is present-day Equatorial Guinea. He then finds himself in the different worlds of everyday life: the market, the café, the taxi, his son’s school, the hospital, the police station, and finally the prison where he is continually humiliated and encounters all sorts of chaos. His eyes become saucers while he fills the frame in big letters with his cries and shouts that he needs to wake up from this nightmare.
Esono Ebalé created the comic together with other artists and in the preface they write how they got the idea for this comic: “Sometime half way through 2011 on a Sunday morning on a terrace of a Malabo bar whilst enjoying peppered soup and a couple of beers, when the music suddenly was interrupted by a speech by Obiang.” In the speech, Obiang mentioned the riches of the country with an unprecedentedly high gross national product, while all around them they saw only mud and neglect. The president was laughing at the people, so it was only fair that the people should laugh at him, with the result that a comic of 125 pages long was created with Obiang as lead role. The comic was published in the United States in 2015 by EG Justice in two languages. The English title reads, Obi’s nightmare.
