Ton Dietz
On the occasion of the retirement of Ton Dietz as director of the African Studies Centre Leiden (as of 1 September 2017), the ASCL Library created a special web dossier. It consists of, on the one hand, titles from the ASCL Library collection written by (or featuring a contribution by) Ton Dietz, and, on the other hand, titles from the ASCL Library collection written by others. All titles are related to subjects important in the work and private life of Ton Dietz. The titles in this web dossier are available in the ASCL Library and are linked directly to the corresponding record in the library’s online catalogue, which provides further details and, in many cases, online access and/or an abstract.

Introduction
Ton Dietz’ research and other interests - an overview
Ton Dietz started his academic career in Nijmegen, as a human geographer. Ton defended his PhD thesis, Pastoralists in dire straits: Survival strategies and external interventions in a semi-arid region at the Kenya/Uganda border: Western Pokot, 1900-1986, at the University of Amsterdam in 1987. The subject of his early research, Kenya and more specifically the Pokot, form the first topic highlighted in this web dossier.
The following chapter is entitled human geography, a discipline focusing on the spatial component of human life on earth, which remained an important theme throughout Ton’s work. Initially, the focus lay on the relationship between man and environment in a specific setting: the livelihoods and coping strategies of pastoralists in a semi-arid region. Later, this was extended to a broader theme, the political aspects of natural resource management, and expanded to other settings, such as African cities, and their sustainability.
For Ton, the discipline of human geography took on a growing multidisciplinary and applied form. Development, the core of his Leiden chair, African development, is the next theme to receive attention in this web dossier. When Ton started at the ASCL he was very optimistic about Africa’s development potential: he characterized this as Africa’s silver lining. In recent times, his view has become more sceptical, as reflected in: 'Africa 2016-2100: Demographic Trends and Consequences for the Continent and for the World', the Cleveringa lecture that he gave in Rabat on 29 November 2016, as well as on other occasions.
Two important contemporary issues addressed in this speech, migration and climate change, form the subject of the next two chapters in this web dossier. These chapters contain Ton’s writings about Africa’s global connections and climate change, but largely focus on other recent literature on these issues, related to the content of the aforementioned lecture.
Finally, two of Ton’s more personal interests are included in the dossier: maps and stamps. As a geographer, maps and statistics are important, and the ASCL thematic maps that Ton has helped to produce reflect his enjoyment for combining these two elements. In addition, there are a selection of the historical and more recent maps in the ASCL Library collection.
Ton’s love of maps is matched, if not surpassed, by his love of stamps. Ton is a philatelist, and a collector of African stamps in particular. In his African Postal Heritage (APH) papers, Ton shows how nations portray themselves, their history and identity, in their stamps. Included in this chapter are a small number of publications by other authors on postage stamps from the ASCL Library collection.
These, along with the other literature in this web dossier, may provide some reading for Ton in his retirement. But we also hope that Ton will find reasons to keep visiting the ASCL and its Library for many years to come.
