Do you have a keen interest in Africa and are you looking for a suitable master’s programme? Then apply for the Master African Studies at Leiden University!  

The programme is unique in the Netherlands and highly recommended throughout Europe for its multidisciplinary foundations, international orientation, and embedded research component. 

Through a set of six cross‑cutting themes you will be introduced to key debates and approaches in African Studies:

The programme is inter- and multidisciplinary, offering multiple perspectives from the Humanities and Social Sciences. 

Focus on your interests 
You’ll have the freedom to tailor your studies to your interests. Choose your own Embedded Research Project, which you will carry out in collaboration with an organisation working in or on Africa.  

The master is small-scale and community oriented, ensuring that students benefit from the strong and highly qualified teachers’ and research network.  

Graduates from the Master African Studies perform well in the labour market. They work across a variety of fields, including research, NGOs, journalism, the financial sector and policy.
