Combating Islamist Radicalization in South-Africa

Abstract: When examining the phenomenon of Islamist radicalization in Africa, tremendous attention is being placed on the likes of Al Shabaab in Somalia, Boko Haram in Nigeria and Al Qaeda's North African franchise. Far too little attention is being paid to Islamist radicalization in South Africa, which is increasingly playing a key role in global terror networks. This seminar will seek to examine the sources and trajectories of Islamist radicalization in South Africa as well as to propose ways to combat this by examining lessons learned from international practice.

Hussein Solomon is a Professor in the Department of Political Sciences at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He is also a Visiting Fellow in the Mackinder Programme for the Study of Long-Wave Events at the London School of Economics and Political Science and a Visiting Professor at the Global Collaboration Centre at Osaka University in Japan.
