Exhibition: African colours. Photos by Johan Gerrits

A photographic journey through Angola, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali and Niger

"Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not"  Ralph Waldo Emerson

Photographer Johan Gerrits was born in the east of the Netherlands, where the countryside is particularly green. His interest in nature was one of the reasons for starting photography 25 years ago but since then his photos have changed from just being of nature, architecture and art. It is now people who are the subjects of much of his travel photography.

Two of his great passions in life are photography and travelling. He believes that travel broadens one's view of the world and makes people more tolerant, and this reflects itself in our way of life and thinking. Experiencing other cultures, rituals and customs enriches one’s knowledge and deepens our understanding of the world around us.

By documenting unique cultures, some of which are vanishing fast, Johan Gerrits hopes that his work can help preserve their beauty and cultural diversity. In his photography he tries to reveal a person's character and spirit but also respects their culture, habits and religion as far as possible.
