Film seminar: The Supreme Price (Movies that Matter) in presence of Nigerian human rights activist Hafsat Abiola

The Supreme PriceThe documentary film The Supreme Price tells the story of Nigerian human rights activist Hafsat Abiola and her family. Hafsat Abiola will be present at this film seminar organized in collaboration with the Movies That Matter Festival, an initiative of Amnesty International.

In 1993, Hafsat Abiola's father M.K.O. Abiola was elected President of Nigeria, but his victory was shortly afterwards annulled and he was arrested. While he was imprisoned, his wife Kudirat took over leadership of the pro-democracy movement,  winning international attention for the Nigerian struggle against human-rights violations perpetrated by the military dictatorship.

The Supreme Price focuses on Hafsat Abiola, who was about to graduate from Harvard when her mother was murdered. Her father died in prison two years later. She is now at the forefront of a progressive movement to empower women and dismantle the patriarchal structure of Nigerian society.

Director Joanna Lipper is a filmmaker and a lecturer at Harvard University, where she teaches a course called 'Using Film for Social Change'.

After the screening, Hafsat Abiola will be interviewed by ASC researcher Prof. Stephen Ellis, followed by a Q & A with the public.
