Filmscreening and debate: Miners Shot Down
This film screening and debate are organised by Wordt Vervolgd, Amnesty Netherlands' monthly magazine about human rights, and is part of the Movies that Matter film festival.
The documentary 'Miners Shot Down' by South African film maker Rehad Desai analyses the police violence against striking mine workers in Marikana, South Africa, in August 2012.
After the film screening, film maker Rehad Desai, Ineke van Kessel, senior researcher African Studies Centre and author of the biography 'Mandela in een Notendop', and Julia Foudraine, Research Masters student African Studies Centre who did research among the mine workers earlier this year, will enter into a debate. Marnix de Bruyne, editor of Wordt Vervolgd and author of 'Het Land van Soekmekaar' will lead the discussion. Issues to be raised are: To what extent is the Marikana case exemplary for actions by the South African administration in the rest of the country? What can we say about the direction South Africa is going? What are the consequences of the current mass strikes for potential investors? And what does this all mean for the elections in South Africa, to be held on 7 May 2014?
