If an icon is an image that is universally recognized to be representative of something, 'the Dogon' could be seen to be an icon of 'traditional societies', 'the Zulu' of African politics, and 'the Maasai' as an icon of African warriors. What has ethnography's role been in producing these icons? And how, in turn, are these images used by the 'iconised' peoples themselves in promoting/ constructing their 'culture'? These will be among the topics discussed during the ASC seminar.
With special guest speaker photographer Agnès Pataux, who will show examples of her work among the Dogon. 

Agnès Pataux auteur-photographe indépendante vit et travaille à Paris.
De 1998 à 2004 Agnès Pataux séjourne régulièrement à Yendoumann et ses environs, en Pays dogon (Mali) où elle réalise un portrait d'une société remarquable au mode de vie étroitement lié au milieu environnant.
Depuis 2002 elle poursuit un travail sur les confréries de chasseurs, les ritualistes et leurs objets communément appelés « fétiche » au Burkina Faso (chez les Lobi, les Gan, les Dian, les Dagara, les Bérifon, les Turka, les Sénoufo...) et au Mali (en Pays Mandé et dans le Miniankala).
En 2009, quelques unes des 28 photographies acquises par les collections nationales du musée du quai Branly à Paris, sont présentées dans le cadre de l'exposition « Recettes des Dieux ».
