Latest electronic acquisition: British Online Archives

British Online ArchivesThe African Library is excited to announce our latest online acquisition, two collections from the British Online Archives. These are:

Colonial Africa in official statistics: 1821-1953

This collection contains Blue Books, official statistical reports, parliamentary committee reports, and other archival material from thirteen British colonies and protectorates in Africa compiled during the period 1821-1953. It provides historical data on subjects like population, revenue, education, trade, agriculture, and land. Known by their distinct blue covers, Blue Books are official governmental reports and other government publications compiled by parliamentary committees on various topics of historical, economic, social and educational interest. The standardised nature of the Blue Books allows for comparisons to be drawn geographically and over time on issues and trends such as the slave trade, economic policy, education, and public health.

Reporting on Africa: from apartheid to pan-Africanism, 1949-1995

Drawn from the writings of journalist and writer Colin Legum, this collection contains a range of his writings and reports on twentieth century African politics. This includes material on pan-Africanism, including on the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), articles documenting and attacking the apartheid regime in South Africa, as well as an exploration of African politics against the backdrop of decolonisation and the cold war.

With the addition of these collections, we not only increase our online offering, but add to our rich collection of primary sources, complementing our current holdings and enabling more comparative and multidisciplinary research.
