A Monumental Relationship: North Korea and Namibia

Visitors to Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia, will quickly learn a remarkable fact that is well-known among the local population—much of the capital’s architectural landscape is designed and constructed by North Korea.In this article, Tycho van der Hoog, PhD candidate at the ASCL, explains that in Namibia, "much of the capital’s architectural landscape is designed and constructed by North Korea" and explores the relationship between Namibia and North Korea by providing historical and political context for this connection".

Tycho van der Hoog is a PhD candidate at the African Studies Centre Leiden. His PhD project, tentatively titled ‘Blood, Bullets, and Bronze: The Relations Between North Korea and Southern Africa, 1960-2020’ seeks to reveal the ties that bind North Korea to the African continent.
