New regulation Gerti Hesseling Prize (AEGIS)

The Board of AEGIS (the European Association of African Studies Centres) has decided to change the Gerti Hesseling Prize. It used to be a prize for the best journal article of an author based in Africa and publishing in an African Studies journal. From 2020 onwards the prize (of € 1500) will be awarded by the organizing committee of the biannual AEGIS Summer School in Cagliari to the best African PhD candidate participating in that Summer School.

Gerti Hesseling (1946-2004) was director of the African Studies Centre in Leiden from1998 until 2004, and she was one of the founding mothers of AEGIS. (Photo: Stichting Kakaran).
