New textbook for teacher training colleges uses ASCL migration research
Many teachers and students in Dutch teacher training colleges for primary education will use the new textbook De wereld in met aardrijkskunde ('Exploring the world with geography'), written by Anouk Adang and Marian Blankman and published by Uitgeverij Coutinho in Bussum (2020). One of the chapters deals with migration and takes Ghana as an example. The chapter criticizes the old-fashioned ‘push-and-pull theory’, that for decades dominated migration lessons. Using a recent publication by Ton Dietz and Hein de Haas, the book introduces the aspirations-capabilities theory and related ideas, used in research and education at the University of Amsterdam and the African Studies Centre Leiden.
