Study day: The trafficking of girls and women and the Nigerian community in the Netherlands
Speaker(s): Stephen Ellis, José Aarts, Yvette Schoenmakers and Meira Asher |
As space is limited, is it unfortunately not possible any more to register. On 10 September, the Afrika-Studiecentrum in Leiden will be hosting a workshop on the movement of Nigerian girls and women to the Netherlands to work in the sex industry and some related matters concerning irregular migration from Nigeria to Europe. Jose Aarts (independent researcher), Stephen Ellis (ASC and VU Amsterdam) and Yvette Schoenmakers (Bureau Beke, Arnhem) will all present their recent research on this subject. Meira Asher (artist and programme maker) will present a radio broadcast that she has made based on recordings with Nigerian sex workers in the Canary Islands. There will be no formal papers. In addition to the four presentations, there will be plenty of time for discussion among participants in the workshop. Space is limited to 30 participants. Those interested are therefore advised to register as soon as possible with the secretariat of the Afrika Studie Centrum. Since the 1980s, the Netherlands has become a significant site both as a base for Nigerian sex-workers and as a staging-post in journeys from Nigeria via Schiphol to other European destinations. This activity includes adult women and girls, and those who travel to Europe with foreknowledge as well as those who can be considered as having been trafficked. This study day is initiated by Stephen Ellis whose longer-term research concerns the history of Nigerian organized crime.
