Unequal catch. Gender and fisheries on the Lake Victoria landing sites in Tanzania

Unequal catchAuthor: Adalbertus Kamanzi

This book deals with the issue of livelihood promotion of the people living on landing sites on some Tanzanian islands of Lake Victoria. Due to the dominance of the patriarchal social system, women find themselves economically disadvantaged and having to earn from the men’s economic establishment, particularly business activities. With the exploitation of gender stereotypes, however, men and women are engaged in the relationship industry that has led to the spread of HIV/AIDS, a phenomenon most people on the islands are fatalistic about. A transformative paradigm is proposed for holistically dealing with HIV/AIDS, departing from the livelihood promotion processes of the people.
