Zanele Muholi, South African photographer
Zanele Muholi / Ricardo Martínez Vázquez ... [et al.]. - Madrid : Casa África La Fábrica, 2011 (Fotógrafas africanas no. 1)
The first issue in the series Fotógrafas africanas = African women photographers focuses on the Faces & Phases series by South African photographer Zanele Muholi.
In her series Muholi, born 1972, offers an unflinching portrait of the lives, politics and aesthetics of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community in South Africa. A lesbian and human rights activist, Muholi uses her photographs to raise awareness about the LGBTI community in a country where violence against gays is commonplace.
In September 2013 Muholi was honoured with a Prince Claus Award for her work as a visual activist, supporting and promoting self-expression and pride within the LGBTI community in South Africa and increasing knowledge and understanding of sensitive and/or taboo issues in South Africa and beyond. Her exhibition fo(u)nd is on view in the Prince Claus Fund Gallery 6 September through 22 November 2013.
