Abstract

In the first week of December 2013, Fred Cooper was in Leiden to participate in the conference "South Asia and the long 1930s: appropriations and afterlives. We caught him on the day that he was giving a public lecture on his current work, entitled Beyond Empire: France and French Africa in the Post-World War II Context. The interview took place in the chilly medieval dungeons of Leiden, now one of the more fancy conference locations of the university in the historic city centre. Fred Cooper is well known for his work on African history and his studies of colonialism and empire.
