| Abstract | This PhD thesis consists of six scientific journal articles, presenting a sociological analysis of economic life in Mgeta, Uluguru mountains, Tanzania. Research was carried out over the period 1985-1989, with a return visit in November 1991. After the introduction, ch. 2 discusses in general terms the interpretation of socioeconomic change in Tanzania's rural areas. Ch. 3 treats the agricultural decline in the Uluguru mountains. Ch. 4 discusses the Waluguru traders in Dar es Salaam. Ch. 5 and 6 examine land disputes. Ch. 7 discusses life expectations of school-leavers in Megeta. The epilogue treats the relevance of ethnography for development theory |
