Worked with a variety of agencies including governmental, non-governmental, international, multilateral and intergovernmental in Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Zimbabwe and Côte d'Ivoire. Most recent positions held are: Head of Institute For Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) office to the African Union, and as a senior researcher with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS).  Currently I work as advisor to the Chairperson of the Mo Ibrahim foundation.
