CRG Seminar: African Diaspora in Eastern Europe
Primary tabs
This lecture by Dr Karina Simonson (Vilnius University) will discuss the history and current dynamics of the African diaspora in Eastern Europe. While it is commonly believed that this region has had minimal connections with the African continent, this presentation will demonstrate that this perception is far from the historical truth. Using Lithuania as a focal point, it will examine the socialist-era "friendship of peoples" initiatives, the movement of individuals between these regions, and the portrayal of Africa and Africans in Lithuanian visual arts. Additionally, the presentation will address race and racialisation issues prevalent in the region.
This event is organised by the CRG 'Africa in the World: Rethinkings Africa's global connections'.
This event takes place in person in Leiden. If you would like to participate online, please send an email to Prof. Mayke Kaag.
