Lidewyde Berckmoes on the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Norwegian Dag Og Tid

Thirty years after the Rwandan genocide, violence continues to destabilise eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the Tutsi-led M23 group has captured large territories and key cities in recent months. Analysts point to Rwanda’s involvement and warn that M23 is now stronger and more organised than in the past. Lidewyde Berckmoes, associate professor and senior researcher at the African Studies Centre Leiden, places the conflict in a wider geopolitical context. She argues that global shifts are eroding the sanctity of national borders, making today’s violence not just a repeat of history, but part of a broader transformation.
