Look back on conference talks by Rahmane Idrissa
Rahmane Idrissa gave several talks during conferences and symposiums in the last few weeks.
On 27 and 28 May, he gave a talk on migration and a lecture on the geopolitics of the Sahel at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain). On 1 June he discussed democracy in Africa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague. And on 5 June, he gave a conference talk as part of an 'Islam in Africa. History, Trends, Emerging Perspectives' conference organised in Paris.
Islam in Africa
This last conference, on Islam in Africa, was jointly organised by several French university research centres (EPHE-PSL, EHESS, IMAF) the University of Florida (represented in this case by former ASCL colleague Ben Soares), and Northwestern University. The range of discussions was extremely broad, covering topics from the study of manuscripts to Japanese researchers interested in Islam in Africa, as well as the Malian crisis (presented by Leiden PhD alumnus Ibrahima Poudiougou) and the works of the nineteenth-century anti-slavery theologian Moussa Kamarah.

Rahmane Idrissa emphasised that it would be beneficial to study Islam not in isolation, but in relation to the various social, political, economic and historical realities that characterise Africa. After all, this is the precise meaning of the expression 'Islam in Africa'. It is hoped that the conference will contribute in particular to the revitalisation of the scholarly journals Islamic Africa and Islam et Sociétés au Sud du Sahara.
