Mirjam de Bruijn was recently interviewed by NOS.nl about the crisis regarding the al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group JNIM in Mali. She highlights how JNIM’s fuel-route blockade severely restricts civilians’ mobility and life in Bamako. De Bruijn argues the group is not simply aiming to seize the capital by force, but applying political pressure to open negotiations. She also warns that JNIM is increasingly appealing to marginalised youth, and warns of its growing military strength.
