Eric Tamatey Lawer

Dr Eric Tamatey Lawer is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana, and a Visiting Fellow at the African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL). He holds a PhD in Development Geography from the University of Bremen, Germany, an MPhil in Development Studies from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway, and a bachelor’s degree in Geography and Political Science from the University of Ghana. His current research focuses on underwater timber ‘salvage’ and infrastructural contestations on Ghana’s Volta Lake, the political economy of natural resource conflicts in Ghana, with a particular emphasis on the Songor Lagoon and the salt economy of Ada, as well as energy transition in West African ports. During his fellowship, Eric will continue his research and complete a manuscript titled Energy Transition in West African Ports: Economic, Political, and Institutional Barriers at Tema Port in Ghana. He will also deliver a talk on a topic from his ongoing research and contribute to academic discussions at the ASCL and the ‘Sea-ing Africa Infrastructure Project in Port City Regions in Ghana and Morocco’, anchored by the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology.
