Raphael Babatunde
Dr. Raphael Babatunde holds a First Class Honours Bachelor and Master of Science Degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. In 2005 he was awarded the German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD) Fellowship for Doctoral studies and he obtained his Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics and Social Sciences from the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany in 2009. Dr. Babatunde has been a Lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management, University of Ilorin, Nigeria since 1999. Presently, he is a Senior Lecturer and the coordinator of postgraduate programmes of the department. He teaches Micro and Macroeconomics, Development economics and policy, Project planning and management, Agri-business management and finance, Research methodology and Rural development economics to undergraduates and postgraduates students. Dr. Babatunde’s research activities focused on development economics, food security and nutrition economics, livelihood diversification, social protection and remittances with special interest on Nigeria and Benin Republic. Dr. Babatunde has published over 40 articles in peer-review local and international journals in these areas of research. He has also written a chapter in a book, Issues of Development. Dr. Babatunde, who is a member of many professional organizations, has attended several local and international conferences and has won research and travel grants from many organizations such as International Development Research Centre IDRC, Canada, Center for the Study of African Economies CSAE, University of Oxford, GREThA, University of Bordeaux IV, Tropencentrum, University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart and Institute of Research for Development IRD, University of Paris-Dauphine, France.
In 2010, Dr. Babatunde was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for International Cooperation and Development (CICOPS), University of Pavia, Italy where he studied the impact of remittances on food security and nutrition in rural Nigeria. Dr. Babatunde has also won a Visiting Research Fellowship under the African Guest Researcher’s Programme 2013 at The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI), Uppsala, Sweden. He is the Ambassador of CICOPS in Nigeria and a member of the DAAD alumni network. Dr. Babatunde is a consultant to a number of International organizations such as IFPRI, USAID, UNDP and IDRC. He is a partner in several local consultancy firms such as JIDE ORO and TIMY Consultancy firms and he is the founder of Havana Consult Nigeria Limited. Here at the ASC, Leiden, Dr. Babatunde will complete a research work titled, “assessing the role of off-farm income diversification on agricultural food production in rural Nigeria” and will present a seminar on the topic, On-farm and off-farm work: substitutes or complements?
