On behalf of the jury, the ASCL is pleased to announce that the winner of the Africa Thesis Award 2017 is Adriaan Steyn for his thesis A new laager for a ‘new’ South Africa: Afrikaans film and the imagined boundaries of Afrikanerdom. Adriaan Steyn completed his MA in Social Anthropology in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch University (South Africa) in June 2016. The prize will be presented to Adriaan at the LeidenASA Annual Meeting on 7 December 2017.

The Africa Yearbook covers major domestic political developments, the foreign policy and socio-economic trends in sub-Sahara Africa – all related to developments in one calendar year. The Yearbook contains articles on all sub-Saharan states, each of the four sub-regions (West, Central, Eastern, Southern Africa) focusing on major cross-border developments and sub-regional organizations, as well as one article on continental developments and one on African-European relations. Prof. Jon Abbink is co-editor of this volume.

The library system of the African Studies Centre Leiden is being integrated into the library system of Leiden University. This will both effect the ASCL Online Catalogue and the lending system. In January staff will still work to transfer the old library system to the new system. Current book loans will be automatically transferred. During the transition period books can be returned and new books can be borrowed. Find out about all practical issues.
