What is the relevance and role of frugal innovation within the Sustainable Development Goals? The Centre for Frugal Innovation in Africa (CFIA) organizes an international conference in Leiden on 7 and 8 November discovering answers to this question. The Centre for Frugal Innovation in Africa is part of the strategic alliance between Leiden University, Delft University of Technology and the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

On 9 October the African Studies Centre Leiden will be presenting its new research programme for 2018-2023 and introducing its new professors in African Studies. Professors Jan Abbink and Rijk van Dijk, who previously held chairs at other universities, will be taking up their chairs in Leiden. Jan-Bart Gewald, new director of the ASCL, and Mirjam de Bruijn, Chair LeidenASA, will give presentations. Marleen Dekker will be giving her inaugural lecture as new Professor of Inclusive Development in Africa.

Marleen Dekker has been appointed Professor of Inclusive Development in Africa at the African Studies Centre of Leiden University. Dekker is trained as a human geographer and holds a PhD in Development Economics. In addition to her work as a senior researcher at the ASCL, she is the coordinator of the Secretariat of INCLUDE, the Knowledge Platform on Inclusive Development Policies in Africa. Marleen Dekker will give her inaugural lecture on 9 October, when the new ASCL research programme and new ASCL professors are presented.

Prof. Ton Dietz has retired as Director of the African Studies Centre Leiden and as Professor of the Study of African Development on 1 September 2017. He gave his Farewell Lecture 'Africa: Still a Silver Lining' on Monday 25 September in the Academy Building, Leiden, after which he received the Order of Merit from the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Award-winning author and Professor of African Studies at Oxford University Jonny Steinberg will give an ASCL seminar on Thursday 12 October. Prof. Steinberg will explore the nature of Verwoerd’s leadership of South Africa during the high apartheid era. More especially, he will examine how Verwoerd took command of a dubious conception of the future to accrue power in the present. You are very welcome, please register for this event!
