On 1 May the African Studies Centre Leiden welcomed journalists from newspapers, TV programmes, online and other media, to acquaint them with the experts and expertise the ASCL has to offer.

After a presentation by Director Jan-Bart Gewald on the main developments in Africa and the ASCL research programme, two researchers gave lectures: Lidewyde Berckmoes on growing up with war in the Great Lakes Region, and Rahmane Idrissa on Rahmane Idrissa on Salafi radicalism in the Sahel.Salafi Radicalism in the Sahel. Jos Damen, head of the ASCL Library, presented useful sources on Africa, like the Country Portal, Connecting Africa and the Library Catalogue. After that, the journalists had the opportunity to 'speed-date' with researchers - a good base for first conversations that will undoubtedly lead to longer ones.

Barry Gilder, listening to questions from the audience. This was followed by the seminar by Barry Gilder, former anti-apartheid activist and security official from South Africa, who shed some light (not on the classified information!) on the fascinating books he has written: The List (fiction), and Songs and Secrets: South Africa from Liberation to Governance (non-fiction).
